‘N’ SCALE Model Trains
Popular Model: ‘N Scale’: ‘N’ Scale model is one of the most popular model of the Scale trains. It is commonly used as indoor scale model train. Earlier, N scale was also known as ‘OOO’ or ‘Treble-O’ (1:152) scale. The ‘N scale model train’ stands derived from the abbreviation of Nine Millimetres. This 9mm is the distance of the train’s inner edges. The N scale model became very popular with hobbyists on account of its size, as compared to the HO scale model train, the latter being bigger in size than N scale, and also that it take less space/ area to enable them to build a longer track in the same space. N scale models are almost half of HO scale (1:87). They could also easily build up the layout and sceneries in large proportion to suit the N scale. This model appeared in 1962, though earlier trains and the accessories of similar gauge existed before 1962.
Operation of N Scale Models: Models of N scale trains are propelled by the energy of 12 V. DC motors. Traditionally, the speed of the model trains were determined by the voltage supplied to it and direction by polarity of power to trains. But now, number of hobbyists has started preferring DCC, i.e. Digital Command Control, used to determine direction and speed of their trains. Surface mount technology is used for this purpose and also the new motors, which draw little current (0.2 amps).
Popularity of N Scale Model: The popularity of N scale model train can be estimated by the worldwide large following. But in popularity, it is on second number after HO scale model. It is more popular in plances where space at home is limited, in the countries like Japan. There HO scale model is considered bigger. The second reason to choose N scale over HO is the advantage of creating more visual in the same area which makes more complex and expensive models.
Introduction of N Scale Model: In United Kingdom, Lone Star introduced in very first N scale model train (1:160) in year 1961. It was named as Treble-0-Lectric (OOO). The gauge was around 8 mm and the model was original die cast metal model. Soon Electric models arrived and the gauge was then widened from 8 mm to 9 mm. Electrified models followed soon after.
Utility of N Scale Components for Other Models: The components and gauge of N scale models were also used in larger scales in other models, like 009 and HO scale with the purpose to model narrow gauge trains for those models. To model meter gauge (Nn3), N scale models were being used on Z scale track.
Landmark for N Scale Models: One of the N scale layouts in United States, which is considered as a landmark, is the “Clinchfield”. Build in 1978, by Late Gordon Odegard, was featured in a number of articles in Model Railroader Magazine. This model was highly portable and used a unique kind of aluminium frame and Styrofoam construction, which helped in cutting down the weight. It was awarded with grand prize in 1984 sweepstakes. It was thereafter displayed number of times in train shows.
