Model Scale Trains

Model scale refers to the ratio or proportion of the size of the model to that of the prototype. In the same way, Model scale of trains refers to the ration model scale train to the actual train size. For example, HO scale is 1/87 reduced from full size similarly N scale is 1/160 that of the real rail/train transport. The real thing has a scale of 1/1.

Model Scale Train – A Popular Choice of Hobbyists: Possessing a model scale train is a hobby and its hobbyist finds big interest in making exactingly executed models. This hobby may range from owning such a train up to creating a perfect layout around the train. They try to make an exact copy of scenario through which the train passes. They layout may include roads, building, streams, hills, vehicles, etc.

Model Railroaders: The hobbyists of Scale Model Trains are popularly known as "model railroaders" or "railway modellers". Some of them can even be found to maintain Miniature Railway or Backyard Railroad models, which are large enough to ride. They find great enjoyment in collecting models, creating layout around the train, tracks, signals and scenery. Sometimes they have to shell a big chunk of amount on this hobby. Some older scale models fetch very high prices.

Popular Scales: The largest common scale used is 1:8 sometimes, as used for park rides. One scale, which is most popular as backyard model is G scale (1:24), also called Garden scale model. The size of G scale model makes it convenient to fit it into a garden and to keep the scenery in proportion to the size of trains. Scales, which are commonly used indoors, are O, HO scale, and N scale. Popular children's toys are consisted of O scale models.

Operation of Scale Model Trains: HO scale train runs on realistic-looking two-rail track. These models are powered either by direct current, or Digital Command Control. In direct current, varying voltage is applied to change the speed and polarity to change the direction. And in Digital Command Control, commands are sent to a decoder in each locomotive. Some trains run on alternating current supplied by a "third rail" having small bumps on each tie down the centre of track. HO scale has got several narrower gauges, which represents narrow gauge trains in the same scale as of their HO counterparts. When the term HO is used in the hobby of slot car racing, it does not denote a precise scale, but denotes a general size of track, which can range from 1:87 to approx. 1:64 scale.

A Finer & Accurate Set of HO Model: There is also a finer, more accurate set of HO model railroad standards called Proto: 87, which is designed to overcome the usual compromises used in manufacture of model train components. If we compare the two, Prot: 87’s track gauge and scale are the same, but components like wheels and tracks have been narrowed down to correct 1:87 scale.
