What is a Model Scale Train?
A model scale train is the copy of actual train but have a smaller size and dimensions are generally in equal proportion to the dimensions of real train.
Constituents & Functioning of a Train Model: A typical train model consists of a locomotive, 3 to 5 freight/ passenger cars, a track - generally circle or oval shaped, a transformer (called power pack), and a wire set to connect the track with the power pack. There is also a re-railer section that actually helps to put the locomotive and the cars onto rails in an easy manner. If you go for a more elaborate model train set, it might have a track switch which is called a “turnout” and few accessories like tunnel, a bridge, tiny structures, telephone poles and trees.
Operating Systems: Generally these model train engines are operated by the electricity (low voltage DC electricity), which is supplied via tracks. But there is another way of operation, which uses AC, as like Märklin and Lionel Corporation.
Early Scale Model Trains in Toy Market: In toy market, maximum of the early scale train models were driven by clockwork and were controlled by levers on the locomotive– stop/ go and reverse. This control gave a crudeness to the model but it was practical enough to have these kind of controls because these scale models were robust and large enough. Later on a number of manufacturers introduced the stopping and slowing tracks that had the feature to trigger levers on the locomotive and also allow reliable stops at stations. These features helped in better performance. Other locomotives used actual steam, particularly in large models. Collectors still look and try to own these Steam or clockwork operated engines.
Rail System for the Earlier Electrical models: The electrical models, earlier used three-rail system. In this the wheels used to rest on a metal track having power conductive metal sleepers. It had a separate middle rail for the purpose of providing power to skid under locomotive. Earlier, the toy train models were not plastic made and were tinplate look generic models. Due to non-availability of Plastic in those days, insulation was a problem then.
Few model systems were powered by 2-rail power. Wheels were separated from each other and two rails got the positive & negative supply or 2 sides of AC supply.
Powering Scenario of Model Scale Trains in 19th Century: In 19th century and early 20th century, few homes were having electric supply, therefore it justifies why earlier trains used to run on battery power. Now a day, the battery run trains are considered as toys and hobbyists don’t prefer them. But these are inexpensive train models. And also have an advantage when used in large-scale systems and garden railway. It is a bit difficult to obtain power supply in outdoors and gardens, and battery power is the best solution. High power consumption can easily be met by lead acid batteries.
Live Stream Scale Model Train Engines: Scale model train engines, which are driven by Live steam, are built in sizeable outdoor gauges. These gauges are readily available in G scale (16 mm scale) and can also be found in HO and O scale. Hornby Railways is one of the producers of a range of steam locomotives, who produced live steam trains in OO scale, OO9, HO/OO and N (hand built). Australia owns one train with Z scale.
